Here’s an example from a conversation I once had with one of my patients:

‘Indulging in sugary treats and drinks is causing me to be overweight. This is causing problems in my relationship.’

Why is that a problem?

It makes me feel unattractive and retreat within myself.

Why is that a problem?

It disconnects me from my partner.

Why is that a problem?

I become snappy with my partner because I am so unhappy with myself.

Why is that a problem?

He becomes snappy in return.

Why is that a problem?

We fight.

Why is that a problem?

We feel angry with each other and it destroys our bond and weakens our relationship.

And so on. Continue finding the links for as long as it takes. You’ll know when you’re truly done.

The key is to link the pain you usually associate with the outcome to the behaviour that creates the results you’ve been experiencing. The behaviour is the only thing you can actually influence, and it’s usually also the root of the original and many other associated problems.
